First Class Notes

Hi whoever,

please note my inability to take good notes for my first German class.

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN. that means to welcome cordially, or i welcome you cordially.
Abend! That's German slang for Evening, a greeting because it is the evening at present and I am greeting you.

so for this next exercise your name is JACK, and you are inferior to me so i am addressing you informally.

Ich heisse Johnny Bliss!
(I am called Johnny Bliss!)
[Alternatively I could say "Mein Name ist Johnny Bliss"...you don't really need me to translate that, do you?]

so, wie heisst du?
(as is called you? haha)
[Alternatively "Wie ist dein Name?" - as is your name]

At this point one of us says something that my dumb ass did not actually write down in notes (i'm hopeless! no wonder women don't like me!) but what this missing word means, is like "i'm truly honored to make your acquaintance" except even more grandiose than that.
the response is "gleichfalls!" - according to altavista babelfish, that means "also!"

but wait, Jack! I haven't asked you how you're doing yet!!
since you're still inferior to me, i'm still going to address you informally.
so Jack, wie geht's dir? (meaning quite literally, "how goes it to you?")

but wait, there are twenty different clones of the original Jack and each are giving me a different answer:

es muss ("it must" - not in a very good mood, are you jack??)
mir geht's prima! (great!)
mir geht's soso...
apparently you don't have to say 'mir geht's' or anything either, if you're talking casually to other locals. so i'm going to stop saying 'mir geht's' now.
oh by the way it's "mir ist" if youre talking about body temperature,
"ich bin" if you're talking facts, a la "I'm hungry".
'mir geht's' is the 'ich bin' of emotion, but you wouldn't want to say 'ich bin sehr gut' because it would seem you were on an ego trip.

anyway, mir geht's ausgezichnet (terrific) but ich habe durst (i have thirst).
also... schlecht! ('bad', poor jack)
nicht besonders gut ('not especially good'),
milch (milk... how'd that get in there?),
solala ('so so' again i think??),
ich bin mude (the u's an umlaut - the word means 'tired',
ich bin traurig (sad)
- i went to statements that are coo with a ich bin at the end.

all right so now jack has got this management position and i want him to hire me.

so i'm asking him his name and shaking his hand.

so jack, wie hessen sie? (as they are called?)
or: wie ist Ihr Name? (how is your name?)

oh yeah? and how's it going?
er, i mean wie geht's Ihnen? (how goes it to you?)

and then Jack was antworten (to answer):
"Es geht mir gut!" (It goes to me good!)
years later jack and i are homies,
and when i ask him how its going,
i just say "wie gehts?"

all right, so two things left:

1. a bunch of random words i scrawled across the page with seemingly no rhyme or reason - however i included translations.
2. german numbers.

1.
Uhr - hour!
Ruhrgebiet - Industrial!
treffen - to gather
auf wiedersehen (auf optional) - farewell
auf wiederhoren (auf optional, o with dots over it) - till i hear you again
bis sp(a with dots over it)ter - see you later!
bis bald - till soon
bis morgen - till morning / tomorrow
bis nachst woche - till next week

schiete - shit said politely
ich mag - i like

servus / gruezi - hello!
hallo - hello!
mahlzeit - hello (in the afternoon
hoflich (with dots over o) - polie
genau - exactly, precisely
TschuB - cheers
kette - chain

here's the REALLY FUN ONES:
verpiB dich! - piss off!
mach es dir selber - go fuck yourself!
du kannst mich wohl am Arsch lecken!
&
Leck mich doch am Arsch!
- basically, kiss my ass
pech haben - too bad
komm zur Sache - get to the point
Am Arsch der Welt - in the middle of nowhere
du hast bei mir verschissen - you've screwed up with me (i'm definitely using this one on sabine)

Towns:
Emsdetten
Wanne-Eickel (this may have actually been somebody's name but i wrote it down, so...)
Munster
Quickborn

okay, that was random...

there's more but it's its 12:45 at night and i'm getting tired, so fuck it.

[note: it WAS 12:45 when i wrote this and posted it to my main blog. now it's 3:45 in the afternoon, and I'm still not going to edit and complete it, because, er, i'm lazy.]

here's the numbers. (as if anybody's still reading)

1. eines 2. zwei 3. drei 4. vier 5. funf (with an umlaut) 6. sechs 7. sieben 8. acht 9. neun 10. zehn 11. elf 12. zwolf (dots over o) 13. dreizehn 14. vierzehn 15. funfzehn (umlaut) 16. sechszehn 17. siebzehn 18. achtzehn 19. neunzehn 20. zwanzig 21. ein und zwanzig 22. zwei und zwanzig, etc. 30. dreizig 40. vierzig 50. funfzig (umlaut) 60. sechszig 70. siebzig 80. achtzig 90. neinzig is what i wrote down, but probably in fact neunzig 100. ein hundert 1000. ein tausend. million is same SPELLING (totally different pronounciation) as in english, and billion is ein milliarde.

peace out, wiedersehen and all that.
